Confidence Meets Canvas

—by Jason Hensel

You have to have thick skin to be an artist. Confidence in what you create. Drive toward your success. And constructive indifference to others’ opinions about your work. In other words, you believe what you create is good and that if other people like it, great. If not, you move along and hold steady, confident that the work will find its place and your path is the right one for you.

Jamie Walters is a resilient artist. Her bold, colorful pieces are eye-catching, making her a popular choice among first-time patrons and long-time collectors. Her paintings — fluid acrylics which can incorporate materials like gold leaf and crushed glass — can evoke landscape, aerial topography or pure abstraction.

Walters’s late father, Steve Hill was a painter, so talent is in her blood. But she didn’t begin painting until later in life, after turning 40. Today, her focus is on creating art that is attainable in price and scale. Many can enjoy her art in their homes.

When you look at a Walters piece, you’re likely struck by the mixture of vibrant colors and light. But, you’re also experiencing the expressed confidence of an artist who knows what she wants and knows how to deliver it.

Jamie Walters' art is often shown at Deep Ellum gallery Kettle Art in Dallas. Find her story in the book For the Love, by Jason Hensel (K.Co Press 2025) which chronicles the gallery’s history.
